Climate change baton coming to Holy Trinity

September 20, 2015

Holy Trinity’s EcoCongregation group  has organised the  Borders stage of an international baton relay to promote climate change.

The Climate Justice Baton, made from a recycled church pew, will arrive by train on Sunday September 27, before visiting St. Cuthbert’s RC church, the Melrose Parish Kirk and finally Holy Trinity.

Since its inauguration at the Scottish EcoCongregation Gathering at Falkirk in April, the Baton has visited over a hundred churches, schools and community centres from the Orkneys to Dumfries & Galloway.  In October it will be visiting other Border towns including Selkirk, Yetholm and St Boswells.

Ian Skinner, who chairs Holy Trinity’s EcoCongregation group, said: “Holy Trinity wished to participate in the Baton Relay and it was quickly recognised as a great opportunity to involve the other local churches as an exciting ecumenical event.

“The baton has been paraded through streets and carried up mountains.  In December it will be taken to Paris, where this year’s UN Conference on Climate Change is taking place, to be presented to the Scottish delegation as an expression of the aspirations of Christians across Scotland for a just and lasting settlement.”

The baton, which bears the message “Time for Climate Justice: Churches in Scotland Demand a Deal in Paris, December 2015” is being carried by Rev Trevor Jamison, Environmental Chaplain for Eco-Congregation Scotland.  Rev Jamison will arrive by train at Tweedbank on Sunday morning (Sept 27) and take the baton to St Cuthbert’s, where Mass is expected to finish at around 10:15. St Cuthbert’s congregation will then carry the Baton to the foot of Weirhill and handed to people from the Parish Kirk.  After a short introduction at the start of the 11:00 service, Rev Jamison will then take the Baton to Holy Trinity, in time for his sermon to the congregation.Add News Story here
